Despite its recent turbulent history, Phnom Penh
still manages to exude some colonial charm from
a bygone area. This is particularly so down on
the palm fringed river front where numerous
shops and villas still exist and the spires of
the Royal Palace pierce the skyline. |

About 30 km south of Phnom Penh is Tonle Bati.
Nearby is the Ta Prohm Temple and the Yeah Pean
Temple. Although there has been a shrine since
the 6th century, the oldest buildings still
visible date back to the 10th and 11th century.
The temples have been renovated several times,
as recently as the 17th century. |

Kompong Thom is small town located on the banks
of the Stung Seng River. The province is also
rich in historical sites dated in pre-angkorian
area. The famous one is Sambor Prei Kuk , which
displays around two hundred clay brick temples. |

Tonle Sap Cruise

The Shallow Tonle Sap is the largest of
Southeast Asia's lakes. Numerous streams feed it
and it drains by Tonle Sap River west to the
Mekong River. During the wet monsoon season of
june to November, the high waters of the Mekong
River reverse the flow of the Tonle Sape River
and increase the size of the lake from about 2,
600 to 10,400 sq km. A full day cruise is a
great chance to visit floating village and meet
fishmen at work, friendly children on their
boats. |
