Exploring local fishing techniques

For a truly unique fishing experience, head to An Binh Hotel in Can Tho. The "Pulling Cha to Catch Fish" tour is one of four new tours offered by the hotel. The tour is priced at VND500,000-850,000 per person for groups of 12-32 and includes food and accommodations.

After registering in the afternoon, guests will enjoy lunch before boarding a motorboat to travel across the Can Tho region. All along the riverbanks, guests will see clusters of branches (cha) resting in the river. Cha are used by local farmers to lure fish and shrimp. Once a cluster of fish or shrimp have surrounded the branch, the farmer uses a net to capture them. After traveling on the river for 15 minutes, the boat will dock for guests to see firsthand the process of using cha by local farmers.

Farmers designate a four to six meter wide and 10 to 20 meter long area for the cha, which are set along the riverbank to attract fish at high tide. Farmers will not remove their branches from the river for at least three months and usually do so at the end of the rainy season as the water level decreases.

One week prior to removing the branches, farmers will throw roasted bran, tiny shrimps and steamed rice into the cha to attract more fish. Farmers will also remove all water hyacinths from the cha before removing their branches from the river.

During the harvesting, many people must pitch in to help farmers with the complicated process that entails a giant net and latticework.

After witnessing the harvesting, guests will return to the hotel to enjoy fresh shrimp and fish that were caught from the branches.

The following morning, guests will travel to the Cai Rang floating market.
