Detail Itinerary
Day 1: Lao Cai - Sapa. ~40 km
The train arrives at Lao Cai station around 6:30
am. The road from Lao Cai to Sapa is narrow and
steep, taking us from elevation of 650 to 1600 m
above sea level. Sapa is now quite tourist.
However, we propose a trek to Ta Van village
where is dominated by Zay people. We pass Lao
Chai village on the way and lunch could be in
Lao Chai, Ta Van, or wherever we want. The
children will go together with you along the
way. In Sapa, the humidity is high and it gets
colder after midnight.
Day 2: Sapa - Coc Ly - Bac Ha. ~120 km
Ride down to Lao Cai and then to Pac Ngam to
meet the boat that is waiting to take us to Coc
Ly where you will meet H'mong, Dao and Phu La
people. Coc Ly is wild, lost in the forest and
could only be reached by horse, boat or bike. A
boat is waiting to take us and our bikes on Chay
River for over 1 hour (20 km). Meet local people
and have lunch in Coc Ly before riding back to
Bac Ha.
Day 3: Bac Ha - Luc Yen - Vu Linh. ~130 km
We start the ride from Bac Ha to Luc Yen, follow
a small track, then a boat is waiting for us to
bring the bikes and us to Vu Linh, at our Dao
friends' village. We will cross all the lake (~3
hours). The welcome is exceptional and we hope
you will not be too much tired.
Day 4: Vu Linh - Na Khan. ~210 km
We ride from Vu Linh to Na Khan through Thai
Nguyen (over 200 km). The road is sealed all the
way until Bac Kan and the last part from Bac Kan
to Na Khan is wild and little bumpy. Na Khan a
Tay village, lost in the middle of the primitive
forest. Mr. Lo, chef of the village will welcome
us in his house.
Day 5: Na Khan - Ba Be. ~60 km
Short drive from Na Khan to Ba Be on bumpy road.
Lunch at our captain's house (Mr. Dang, we call
him Zi Dang). Easy boating on the lake and
river. Go to market (if it is the day you
arrive). Stop at waterfall, beautiful swim…Ong
pirate, the chef of Dau Dang waterfall where we
enjoy dinner. Down the waterfall, we could visit
the village and a small school (only few pupils
during the summer). We propose to stay in the
stilt house of forest guards.
Day 6: Ba Be - Hanoi. ~240 km
Quite a long ride but easy (early departure is
better) from Ba Be to Hanoi 240 km.
